A couple of months back, BBC Three aired a documentary on Nintendo which really dug into the company’s darker side (strong arm business practices, shady decision making, etc.). Up until now, the video has been unavailable. However, for those who are interested in watching the documentary (and let me tell you, it’s definitely worth watching), [...]

As many of you know, I’m a comic dork (mainly Marvel stuff…and mainly X-Men…though I’ve recently enjoyed the Ultimates & the New Avengers…as well as a cool indie comic called DMZ). Anyway, I recently found out the Marvel has launched its own podcast. Yeah, they are a little behind the times, but its nice to [...]

On Friday, I gave a brownbag talk for the Instructional Technology Seminar Series entitled Blogs in the Classroom: Communication and Curriculum. As promised, here are a copy of the slides I used (you need the Flash player to view them):

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, [...]

I just ran across a completely free, and very gorgeous (screenshots = wow), MMO. Silk Road Online (http://www.silkroadonline.net/) is a lush MMORPG that draws (loosely) on historical fact in order to create a world which melds Chinese, European, and Islamic mythology and folklore. I’m currently downloading the client as I’m blogging, and will update this [...]

In the wake of the Bioware/Pandemic news, Take 2 Interactive announced today that it had acquired Firaxis games. Don’t be fooled, this isn’t a "creative merger" a la Bioware/Pandemic…its a straight acquisition. While the financial details haven’t been disclosed (nor will they be), I’m sure Firaxis went for a pretty penny…especially now that Civ IV [...]

I recently ran across a Flash based MMO called Dofus (http://www.dofus.com/). Its free if you stay in a specific "realm," and costs 7 $/month if you want full run of the game. Despite that fact that it’s got a bit of a cutesy anime bent, I’ve been having fun with it. Its definitely worth playing [...]

This morning’s Wall Street Journal has announced that BioWare and Pandemic has been purchased by a media-and-entertainment-focused private equity fund that counts Bono of rock group U2 as a partner. Personally, this depresses the hell out of me – given the fact that BioWare was a shining example of Indie development.

The second day of the Game Writers Conference started out a little more leisurely than the first – primarily because I didn’t have to be there as early in order to register. The first talk, entitled “Shared Storytelling: The Writer and the Team,” was given by Susan O’Connor. Susan is the chair of the Game [...]

Yesterday was the first day of the Game Writers Conference. Organized by the Game Initiative (a group dedicated to organizing video and computer game conferences), the Game Writers Conference is dedicated to exploring the craft of writing in game design and the game design industry. The conference itself isn’t really a standalone thing – though [...]
